Each spring and fall we have a coastal trip for interested customers and fellow paddlers. Last spring, we camped on Bell Island in the Currituck Sound area. We paddled the sound area and to Church Island and back. Then we paddled Indian Town Creek since it was near by and caught Bennetts Creek (flows out of Merchant's Mill Pond) on the trip home. Our annual fall trip got re-routed due to a small craft advisory. We had planned to paddle from Harkers Island to Cape Lookout but ended up paddling from Marshallburg to Brown Island and camping overnight on Brown Island. The next day, we paddled Salters Creek from Core Sound to the Pamlico Sound and back. That night we camped in Croatan National Forrest. Each New Years Day we try to paddle something new. January 1, 2010 we paddled the Deep River - Section 5. It is normally classified as a class II+ in one guide book and low class III in another but the water was abnormally high (plenty of water flowing over the dam which usually has no water going over it). At that level there were two rapids easily rating class III. We had one swim due to our unfamarility with the rapid plus we didn't bother to scout and the canoe not being a whitewater variety didn't help either. We probably should have scouted both of those rapids at that water level. Then we had a three mile paddle out on backwater. |
