Whitewater canoeing has truly developed in the last
twenty five years due partially to new inovations in
materials and designs and also due to canoe
paddlers pushing for more and more skills and
moves.
Until the late 40's most canoes were canvas covered
wood frame or wood. In the late 40's, Grumman came
out with their aluminum canoes which were much
tougher and could take more rock bumping. Then in
the late 50's and early 60's, composites
revolutionized the canoe again. Today most canoes
use Royalex or Royalite which is lighter but
repairable and durable.
As canoes became more durable and river worthy,
whitewater canoe paddlers began developing skills
of surfing, enders, rolls, running drops, and squirts.
With the exception of extreme waterfalls, whitewater
canoers match kayakers in river feats.
Often mistook for kayaks, decked canoes (vs open
canoes) are often seen on many whitewater rivers.
Most of these are kayaks converted to decked
canoes by replacing the the kayak seat with a saddle
resulting in the paddler sitting higher with his legs
bent backward at the knees. Knees and butt support
the paddler.
Troublesome Creek has years of experience in
setting up whitewater canoes as well as a supply of
components for custom set ups. Going back to the
pre-Troublesome Creek days, our experience began
with helping Bobby's Whitewater set up canoes
customizing each to paddlers preferences, body
proportion, and weight. As we began looking for
better and better set ups, we also began playing with
rocker and hull modifications. A canoe set up wrong
can severly limit what even a very good paddler can
do with the boat. Come by Troublesome Creek and
let's discuss setting up your whitewater canoe.
